    About this tool

    Water heater code checklist questions

    Which codes does this reference?
The 2021 International Plumbing Code (IPC) for water/relief/pan/pressure items, the 2021 International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC) for combustion air, sediment trap, connectors, and gas shutoff, the IMC/IRC for attic and garage install requirements, and the NEC for electric water-heater circuits. Adoption and amendments vary — your AHJ governs.
    Why do the items change?
The checklist is equipment-aware: pick gas and you get combustion air, sediment trap, and gas-connector items; pick electric and you get disconnect, wire gauge, and breaker items; pick attic or garage and the catwalk or 18" elevation items appear. It shows only what actually applies.
How does this keep money on the table?
Missed code upgrades — the expansion tank, T&P re-route, pan, sediment trap, gas connector — are exactly what gets left off a quick quote and then eaten as a callback. Listing every required item, with its code section, makes each one a defensible line on the estimate.
